Update on Sports for Fall 2020

The Minnesota State High School League’s Board of Directors, at its meeting on Aug. 4, approved moving forward as scheduled with four Fall activities. Girls Tennis, Boys and Girls Cross Country, Boys and Girls Soccer and Girls Swimming and Diving beginning on Aug. 17 with limitations. The Board of Directors also approved moving Football and Volleyball to a modified spring season. Fall Registration will open for these activities along with Cheerleading and Fall Dance on Monday August 10, 2020.

Status of Fall Sports & Activities: The MSHSL “Return to Play Task Force” made formal recommendations to the MSHSL Board of Directors on August 4th, 2020. Multiple options for providing a fall sports experience were considered by the board. The plan approved includes several modifications and safety recommendations for practice and game play, crowd limitations and guidelines for transportation as well as games and length of season reductions. A decision on Adapted Soccer will be made jointly with the MAAA.  Football and Volleyball were moved to a modified spring season  The MSHSL is asking all schools to follow the Covid-19 Sports guidelines for Youth Sports created by MDH.

“Quick Look” Summary of MSHSL Return to fall sports decision:  

Fall Sports that were approved for play with reductions to the total number of games and the length of the fall seasons. The graph below demonstrates a 30% reduction in the total number of events and a 20% reduction in the number of weeks to the regular & postseason.  Games & travel will be limited to “Conference/District” schedules only.  Participation in tournaments and invitationals is prohibited. Sports will be allowed 1-2 games/events per week. Section and State playoffs will not happen.  Each sport will have a culminating activity that maintains the safety limitations of the regular season. More information on what the culminating event will look like for each sport will be shared at a later date. 

New total weeks of season and total number of regular season contests:

  • Boys and Girls Cross Country 10 total weeks of season with max of 7 regular season contests 
  • Boys and Girls Soccer 10 total weeks of season with max of 11 regular season contests
  • Girls Tennis 9 total weeks of season with max of 11 regular season contests 
  • Girls Swim and Dive 11 total weeks of season with max of 11 regular season contests  

Status of Activities, Clubs & other non-MSHSL organizations: Fall Dance Team, Sideline Cheer and Competition Cheer will go on as scheduled.  A decision about other Fine Arts, Activities, Student Clubs & other non-MSHSL organizations will be made shortly.  We will be sharing more specifics and details as they become available.  We appreciate your patience and flexibility as we work through these new guidelines. 

Fall Sports Parent Meetings All Fall Sport Parent Meetings will take place virtually. Some sports will send info via email, others will hold a video conference. Each program’s head coach will do their best to update you as they receive more information. As mentioned, coaches will use email, social media or video conferences to keep families in the know with up-to-date information. If you are not on a current email communication chain from your coach, please send an email to the appropriate coach (see below) to be sure you receive the link to their upcoming meeting (to be held next week).
